WHL Roundup: A look at Saturday's games

Lane Scheidl's recent scoring pace is a good sign for his Regina Pats.

Scheidl scored two goals as Regina defeated the host Swift Current Broncos 4-1 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

The 19-year-old left-winger now has six goals and nine points in his last nine games and 21 total goals on the season, which is good for second in team scoring.

Martin Marincin had a goal and an assist for the Pats (28-22-6), who won for the first time in three contests, while Lyndon Martel added a single goal.

Taylor Vause scored the lone goal for the Broncos (20-31-6), who have now dropped five games in a row.

Matt Hewitt made 17 saves for the win as Jon Groenheyde stopped 31 shots in defeat.

Regina went 3 for 4 on the power play while Swift Current scored once on five opportunities with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Kootenay 5, Saskatoon 2; Lethrbidge 4, Prince Albert 1; Moose Jaw 8, Red Deer 5; Edmonton 5, Prince George 0; Everett 4, Vancouver 2; Kamloops 3, Kelowna 2; Portland 7, Seattle 2 and Tri-City 5, Spokane 3.

At Swift Current, Sask., Marincin opened the scoring at 16:30 of the first period to give Regina the lead after 20 minutes of play..

Vause tied the game with the only goal of the second period, which came at 11:45

Scheidl then scored two straight goals, the first coming 22 seconds into the third period.

Martel added one more at 17:59 to secure a victory for the Pats.

At Cranbrook, B.C., Drew Czerwonka scored two goals, including the winner, as Kootenay (30-17-8) defeated Saskatoon (34-21-1) for their first win in three games.

At Lethbridge, Alta., Sam Mckechnie scored twice and Liam Liston made 31 saves as the Hurricanes (22-35-1) beat Prince Albert (18-35-3), who have now dropped five straight contests.

Warriors 8 Rebels 5

At Red Deer, Alta., Justin Kirsch had two goals and an assist as Moose Jaw (35-15-6) scored six times in the second period en route to defeating the Rebels (25-25-5).

Oil Kings 5 Cougars 0

At Prince George, B.C., Laurent Brossoit stopped all 24 shots he faced and Rhett Rachinski scored three times as Edmonton (37-12-7) blanked the Cougars (17-35-2) for their fourth win in five games.

Silvertips 4 Giants 2

At Everett, Wash., Kent Simpson made 41 saves, earning the game's first star, and Cody Fowlie scored a goal and set up two more as the Silvertips (15-32-9) doubled up Vancouver (32-21-3).

Blazers 3 Rockets 2

At Kelowna, B.C., Dylan Willick scored twice, including the game winner, as Kamloops (40-12-4) picked up its 40th win of the season by defeating the Rockets (24-25-7).

Winterhawks 7 Thunderbirds 2

At Kent, Wash., Cam Reid scored three times and added an assist and Ty Rattie moved into a tie for league scoring leader with a single goal as Portland (37-15-3) crushed Seattle (19-34-2).

Americans 5 Chiefs 3

At Spokane, Wash., Brendan Shinnimin scored twice and set up one more and Ty Rimmer made 24 saves as Tri-City (38-14-2) beat Spokane (31-17-7) to stay atop the U.S. Division standings.
