WHL Roundup: A look at Saturday's games

Matej Stransky scored twice as the Saskatoon Blades beat the visiting Kootenay Ice 5-2 on Saturday in Western Hockey League play.

The 19-year-old winger has now scored in seven straight games and has 10 goals in the process. In 34 games, Stransky has 21 goals and 43 points, which is good for second in scoring on his club.

Nathan Burns had a goal and two assists for the Blades (19-14-1), who have won five games in a row, and Darren Dietz had a goal and an assist.

Matthew Pufahl added a single goal for Saskatoon while Josh Nicholls chipped in with two assists.

Nicholls is on a six-game point streak, which includes seven goals and seven assists, and his 26 goals and 44 points in 33 games leads his club.

Luke Philp and Zach McPhee scored for the Ice (10-21-1), who dropped to 3-10-0 on the road.

Alex Moodie stopped 25-of-27 shots for his fourth win of the season as Mackenzie Skapsky made 36 saves in a losing cause.

Saskatoon was successful on the power play as it went 3 for 6 while Kootenay failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Brandon 4, Moose Jaw 2; Calgary 2, Regina 0; Edmonton 5, Victoria 2; Medicine Hat 7, Kamloops 6 (OT); Kelowna 6, Red Deer 1; Portland 4, Seattle 2; Prince George 6, Vancouver 0 and Tri-City 2, Spokane 1.

At Saskatoon, Dietz opened the scoring with as short-handed goal 8:38 into the first period to give the Blades a 1-0 lead.

Philp responded for the Ice 18 seconds later, however Stransky regained Saskatoon's lead at 9:51.

After a scoreless second period, Stransky made it 3-1 with a power-play goal 1:25 into the third period.

McPhee brought the game within one goal at 3:53, but Pufahl and Burns each added a goal while on the man advantage to secure the victory.

At Moose Jaw, Sask., Chad Robinson scored twice and Curtis Honey turned away 23-of-25 shots as Brandon (13-18-4) doubled up the Warriors (12-17-7), who are on a three-game slide.

At Calgary, rookie Mack Shields made 18 saves for his first WHL shutout and Cody Sylvester had a goal and an assist as the Hitmen (22-7-4) blanked Regina (12-19-4).

Oil Kings 5 Royals 2

At Edmonton, T.J. Foster had a goal and an assist and Tristan Jarry stopped 24 shots as the Oil Kings (21-7-5) picked up their third straight victory by defeating Victoria (17-14-2).

Tigers 7 Blazers 6 (OT)

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Dylan Busenius scored 3:01 into overtime while Elgin Pearce and Ty Stanton combined for three goals and eight points as the Tigers (15-18-2) edged Kamloops (25-9-4), who have dropped three games in a row.

At Red Deer, Alta., Jackson Whistle stopped 28 shots, Dylan McKinlay setup three goals and six different players scored as Kelowna (23-9-2) beat the Rebels (20-13-3) to extend its win streak to six games.

Winterhawks 4 Thunderbirds 2

At Portland, Ore., Taylor Leier scored twice and Mac Carruth made 25 saves as the Winterhawks (27-5-1) extended their winning streak to four games by doubling up Seattle (16-16-2), which are winless in four contests.

Cougars 6 Giants 0

At Prince George, B.C., Chase Witala had a goal and three assists and Brett Zarowny made 23 saves as the Cougars (11-18-4) snapped a four-game winless streak by blanking Vancouver (9-24-0).

Americans 2 Chiefs 1

At Spokane, Wash., Eric Comrie stopped 36 shots and Malte Stromwall scored the winner at 4:47 of the third period as Tri-City (19-12-3) slipped past the Chiefs (23-9-1) in a division-rival matchup.
